Description[]
On a remote island in a tropical sea, Celaena Sardothien, feared assassin, has come for retribution. She’s been sent by the Assassin’s Guild to collect on a debt they are owed by the Lord of the Pirates. But when Celaena learns that the agreed payment is not in money but in slaves, her mission suddenly changes—and she will risk everything to right the wrong she’s been sent to bring about.
Plot[]
Following the deaths of two fellow assassins in Rifthold, Celaena Sardothien and Sam Cortland are sent by Arobynn Hamel to Skull's Bay in order to exact retribution from the Lord of Pirates, Captain Rolfe, for three assassins killed by his fellow pirates. Upon arrival, Celaena and Sam soon discover that Arobynn is using the assassins' deaths to broker a slave trade agreement with Captain Rolfe. Both disgusted by the inhumane conditions that the slaves are in and the immorality of it all, they plot in secret to free all the slaves in Skull's Bay before they are shipped off to sale.
The night before the slaves' departure, Celaena and Sam sneak aboard the two slave ships, the Loveless and the Golden Wolf, disabling the guards aboard. Speaking through a multi-lingual slave, Celaena informs them of her plan and their impending freedom should they follow her instructions. Instigating a bar fight that evolves to include the entire city, Sam and Celaena attempt to sneak away to destroy the Ship-Breaker, a large chain that prevents entrance to and exit from the bay, but is confronted by Rolfe. Distracting him by showing her usually-masked face, Celaena allows Sam to escape while she duels with Rolfe, narrowly defeating him. She watches in horror as Sam destroys the Ship-Breaker, the watchtower, and seemingly himself in the process. The slaves, who had been rowing the ships since dawn broke, manage to escape as the other ships were disabled the night before.
Miraculously, Sam survives the destruction of the watchtower, much to Celaena's relief, and the two begin a more amiable, if slightly awkward, friendship. With a contractual agreement that Rolfe will never again enter the slave trade and will harbor escaped slaves, they return home to Rifthold.

Trivia[]
- The damages to Skull's Bay by Celaena Sardothien and Sam Cortland include the loss of 200 slaves aboard two ships, seven additional ships that were disabled, the destroyed watchtower and the Ship-Breaker, and countless lives and buildings from their instigated brawl, in addition to their exorbitant, unpaid bar-tab.[1]
- The contract letters signed by Captain Rolfe include not only the agreement to never again enter the slave trade, but also establishes Skull's Bay as a safe haven for escaping slaves in addition to punishing Arobynn Hamel with the force of his armada should he engage in the slave trade.[2]
